A book about the history of a jazz club: The Jazz Corner

In Jazz Book on February 23, 2013 at 12:07 pm

Dear friends,

A new book about jazz is always a fantastic thing BUT a new book about the history of a jazz club is so special that I have to share with you  this big news !!!

The Jazz Corner is a club situated in South Carolina at Hilton Head Island. This club follows the patterns of the famous jazz history but it is also a work in progress !

Including 2 CD (Cheek to cheek, Amazing Grace, Route 66, A Foggy Day, Hot Hot Hot……..), this book offers as first chapter an introduction to Jazz History, then the Battle of Swing and a chronology of Jazz.

The author presents what is so important for me : the musicians ! The first part describes the Bandleaders, then the sidemen, the master musicians and the future master musicians.

To end this book, a very surprising section: the Cuisine :-). The Jazz Corner is also a place where you can eat and the best recipes will have no secrets for you. Appetizers like Crab Cakes, The Entrées like Spiced Peach Butter Sauce, the Desserts with the famous Carrot Cake or the Crème Brûlée  will help you to combine great food moments and the pleasure of listening the CD’s. You maybe know that I’m French and most of the recipes come from the French tradition but with little variations hmmmm :-).

I received it as a present and if I was rich, it would be my pleasure to offer it to you, but… I’m only rich in jazz news and in big smiles.

You can buy it via amazon.

Enjoy !

Johanes Radianto will bring to stage the full scope of his journey through life with music. He will be accompanied by Kevin Yosua, a bass player well known in the jazz world, and Elfa Zulham, another great and widely recognized jazz player who has been close friends with Johanes since their time in the Netherlands.

Johanes has a very thick traditional jazz background, and his music brings forth that sense of tradition with a twist of modernity. Through a very well planned repertoire consisting of jazz standards and some of their own composition, the trio is looking forward to sharing their joy of playing music with the audience.

Call for suggestions: Djangofolllies 2014 (Belgium)

In Festivals, Job opportunity on January 25, 2013 at 9:10 am

Dear Friends,

Many perceive Django Reinhardt as one of the greatest personalities of European Jazz. This gypsy guitar player deeply impressed and inspired the jazz scene with his improvisations on the guitar.

In 1994, Belgian musician Koen De Cauter, asked Brosella why nobody in Brussels did anything with Django’s music. So Brosella initiated this event, the Djangofolllies, in memory of Django Reinhardt. To honour this exceptional musician, a series of concerts in the ‘Django tradition’ are programmed in different venues.

The program of Djangofolllies is not limited to the traditional ‘Django style’ but also includes music which shines a new light on the genre and goes beyond the barriers of the ‘hot club’ music. At the festival we had musicians performing modern jazz, flamenco and also songs on the poems of Garcia Lorca were proposed.

Please submit your suggestion for the DJANGOFOLLLIES 2014 (20th edition).

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 7,000 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 12 years to get that many views.

Los Angeles, CA December 17, 2012 – The 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards nominations were announced earlier this month and the new Clare Fischer album, ¡Ritmo!, received a nomination in the category of Best Latin Jazz Album. “We’re honored to be in such good company,” says Brent Fischer who directs the Clare Fischer bands and produced the album featuring the Clare Fischer Latin Jazz Big Band, Poncho Sanchez, Alex Acuña and many others. The Recording Academy states that this year’s Grammy Awards process registered more than 17,000 submissions over a 12-month eligibility period, from October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2012.

¡Ritmo! is Dr Fischer’s twelfth nomination, including last year’s nom for Best Instrumental Arrangement for In the Beginning* from Continuum, also directed and produced by Brent Fischer. Dr. Fischer won in 1986 for his album, “Free Fall,” and in 1981 for “Salsa Picante plus 2 +2.”

The album is getting good response across the nation from major radio stations like WBGO-New York, XM/Sirius, and KCSM-San Francisco. ¡Ritmo! has peaked so far at #23 on the jazz charts and features the writing/arranging team Brent Fischer and versatile pianist, composer, and arranger, the late Dr. Clare Fischer.

Like his father, Brent Fischer who is proud of his Latino heritage, writes and arranges for pop artists such as Michael Jackson, Usher, Al Jarreau, and Eric Benet, to name a few. This is the fifth Clare Fischer album Brent has produced for Clavo Records, with more to come.
