The National Jazz Museum in Harlem

In Few written notes, jazz, Jazz Clubs on April 22, 2013 at 4:15 pm

Dear friends,

Imagine you have a moment just for you, some precious hours to do what you want. Imagine that a place offers you the possibility to discover History and Music. Imagine you have the possibility to discover over 100 hours of the greatest jazz ever played  being discovered for the first time after 60 years.

Then go to the National Jazz Museum in Harlem !

The fourth-floor space on East 126th Street does not look anything like a museum. Flourescent-lighted and largely bare, the room appears to be an office but for a weathered grand piano that sits in the middle of the floor and a few faded photographs that adorn the walls. But the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, one of the city’s lesser-known cultural lights, has never really been about its artifacts. It has always been about the music: the improvisational genius of Charlie Parker, the percussive piano of Thelonious Monk, the elegant stylings of Duke Ellington. The music draws some 7,500 people to the building each year for free programming like Jazz for Curious Listeners, which explores the history of jazz or Harlem Speaks, an interview series with musicians, artists, writers and community leaders.

Enjoy !

A small precious Jazz club in Paris : La cave du 38 Riv’

In Jazz Clubs on April 6, 2013 at 9:49 pm

Dear friends,

There are not so many places which combine my love for medieval history and for jazz. La cave du 38 Riv’ in Paris in one of them.

I have the huge pleasure to present you this little gem, situated in the heart of the “Marais” in a 12th century cellar, the Paris secret soul.

Under the direction of Vincent Charbonnier (double bass player from 1984 to 1997), this venue has the warmth of a owner who knows what jazz is and who respects the artists !

Every Monday, from 6.30 pm, it’s time for amateurs, beginners, shy people. From 8.30 pm, professional musicians are on the stage.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, concerts of “other” Jazz styles (Contemporary, Manouche/gipsy, Bossa, World Jazz)

On Thurday, from 8.30 pm, unplugged jazz, without mic, without ampli.

On Friday, from 9 pm, Jazz concert, and from 10.30 pm, Jam session open for all.

On Sunday, another music type : Baroque at 5 pm with tea and sweets :-).

I hope you will find the time to visit this place and to enjoy the program.

Jazz Club in Helsinki (Finland): Happy Jazz Club Storyville

In Jazz Clubs on March 20, 2013 at 10:16 pm

Dear friends,

What a pleasure I had last week to discover this Jazz Club in Helsinki. On a corner, you get in, then go downstairs and surprise ! Live jazz from 10 pm until…… and in front of the band, a dance floor waits for your steps. After looking at the menu (made as a vinyl record sleeve) I took a diner which was a mix between Italian-Creole-Cajun food. Excellent. You know that this blog wants to promote jazz clubs where you feel like home. This place is one of them ! For sure ! People who are working in this club are very kind and welcome you as they know you for years. The music manager is a musician and the bands are chosen following a high sense of quality and entertainment.

The site of Happy Jazz Storyville is in Finnish but if you want to know the program, do not hesitate to ask !

It is one of my warmest recommendations of the year ! You only have to travel to Finland 🙂 !

New jazz place in San Francisco: SFJAZZ (music AND education!)

In Jazz Clubs on February 18, 2013 at 10:55 am

Dear friend,

When an exceptional place opens the doors, I have to tell you everything :-).

San Francisco has a new jazz place since January 23 2013 with a fantastic program! For example, one of my favourite singers, Patricia Barber, will be on stage on March 3…

This new centre will present world-class artists in concert throughout the year, nurture young musicians’ development and promote music education. In the fall of 1983, SFJAZZ, then known as Jazz In The City, presented two concerts at the Herbst Theatre with a simple philosophy: offer the best of jazz music in an environment that showcases the full spectrum and artistry of the art form.  Thirty years later, the SFJAZZ Center will open just two blocks from the site of the first concerts.  The Center will be a hub of art, music, culture, and community and will take its place alongside major arts institutions.

There will be also Family Matinees which will provide a window into the exciting world of live jazz. Each one-hour matinee features live performance, audience participation, Q&A and amazing music. On March 9, they will dissecting the groove (anatomy of jazz standards).

Every season, SFJAZZ Education hosts intimate conversations with international performing artists prior to select performances.

This place seems to be so fantastic that I have to share the site on which you will find the information you need.

Go on

P.S.: I would like to thank Bill Leikam for this information

Jazz clubs in Massachusetts (USA): list on a great blog !

In Festivals, Jazz blogs, Jazz Clubs on January 23, 2013 at 10:14 am

Dear friends,

Let’s have a look out of Belgium :-). I have discovered a blog which presents a looooong list of the jazz clubs in Massachusetts, in America. You will also find the jazz venues, festivals and an event calendar.

MassJazz is a concerted, statewide effort initiated in 2009 to promote a full range of live jazz performances, community events, educational courses and related cultural activities to the convention and visitors industry.  Working with the state’s travel and tourism agencies, MassJazz is developing a singular program that brands Massachusetts as a jazz destination for domestic and international visitors.  Its goal is to develop visitor packages with hotels, restaurants, performing arts venues and travel services to create an alluring new tourism campaign that stimulates the local economy.

I’m sure that you know where to program your next holidays 🙂 !
